Triboelectric charging is the process by which materials acquire an electrical charge through contact or friction. Physics World reported that researchers led by Tom O'Hara at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom designed an ultrasonic levitation trap to study how charge transfers between individual particles during controlled collisions. [1]

The Bristol team suspended pairs of particles in mid-air using sound waves to measure the charge exchanged in successive impacts. Physics World reported that while the quantity of charge moved in any single collision appears random, the cumulative electrical charge follows a clear and predictable curve. [1]

Physics World reported that the overall pattern of charge accumulation behaves like a charging capacitor, which is an electronic component that stores electrical energy in an electric field. This mathematical model provides new insight into how electrical charges build up within larger, natural clouds of colliding particles. [1]

In short

  • Researchers at the University of Bristol used ultrasonic levitation to isolate and collide individual particles.
  • Single collisions transfer random amounts of static charge between particles.
  • The total build-up of triboelectric charge across multiple collisions follows a predictable mathematical pattern similar to a charging capacitor.
