Finland prepares to open the Onkalo deep geological nuclear waste repository
The Onkalo facility in Finland is set to begin operations as the first engineered underground repository designed to isolate radioactive nuclear waste for 100,000 years.

The Onkalo deep geological repository in Finland is about to begin operations as the world's first engineered structure built to store nuclear waste for at least 100,000 years, New Scientist reported. Carved into bedrock more than 400 metres underground, the facility is designed to keep hazardous radioactive material isolated indefinitely without requiring future maintenance. [1][2]
According to New Scientist, the subterranean tunnels are constructed for extreme long-term safety. Allison Macfarlane at the University of British Columbia noted that facilities such as Onkalo should remain intact for 100,000 to one million years to protect human health and the environment. [1]
A deep geological repository stores hazardous materials within a stable geologic environment, usually located between 200 and 1,000 metres underground. These facilities rely on a combination of stable geology, specialized waste packages, and engineered seals to provide long-term isolation and containment of radiological hazards. [2]
Finland maintains a high-income economy driven by manufacturing and services. While deep repositories exist globally for mercury, cyanide, and arsenic waste in countries such as Canada and Germany, Onkalo represents the most advanced radioactive waste storage site currently under construction. [2][3]
In short
- The Onkalo repository is carved more than 400 metres underground in Finland.
- Onkalo is designed to store nuclear waste safely for at least 100,000 years.
- Deep geological repositories store waste 200 to 1,000 metres below ground using engineered seals and geology.
- Onkalo is the most advanced radioactive waste repository under construction in the world.
