Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel were named joint winners of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 5, 2026. According to Physics World and The New York Times, the three researchers were honored for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. [1][2][8]

Optogenetics is a biological technique that uses light to characterize and control the activity of individual neurons within a living brain. Physics World reported that Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, a protein channel sensitive to light. Karl Deisseroth then modified the protein into a light-controlled neural switch. [2]

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded annually by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute. It is one of the original five prizes established in the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel to recognize individuals who confer significant benefits to humanity. [12][13]

According to Physics World, the development of optogenetics allows neuroscientists to map functional neural circuits. The technique enables researchers to precisely manipulate specific brain cells to study how neural pathways dictate behavior and physiological functions. [2]
