Lead exposure risk mapped across United States neighborhoods using housing data
Researchers have mapped neighborhood-level lead exposure risks in the United States by analyzing local housing age and poverty metrics.

A researcher has mapped childhood lead exposure risk across neighborhoods in the United States using housing age and poverty data, Eos Earth & Space Science reported. Data on lead exposure at the neighborhood level has remained sparse in the country, leaving critical gaps in knowledge regarding where exposure occurs. [1][3]
The United States banned the sale of lead paint for home use in 1978. According to Eos Earth & Space Science, neighborhoods constructed before this ban, alongside areas with higher poverty rates, face a higher risk of lead exposure. Lower-income communities also have fewer resources available for lead remediation efforts. [1]
Lead poisoning is a metal poisoning caused by lead accumulating in the human body. Symptoms include abdominal pain, headaches, memory problems, and irritability. Exposure can cause permanent health issues, severe developmental delays, and, in severe cases, seizures, coma, or death. No amount of lead exposure is considered safe for children. [1][4]
The analysis builds on Environmental Protection Agency research examining local housing stock to identify vulnerable communities. By identifying high-risk areas, the mapping tool aims to help address neighborhood-level lead risks across the nation. [1]
In short
- The sale of lead paint for residential use in the United States was banned in 1978.
- No level of lead exposure is considered safe for children.
- Neighborhoods built before 1978 and areas with higher poverty rates face elevated lead exposure risks.
- Neighborhood-level data on lead exposure in the United States has historically been sparse.
