Low level sea clouds can increase the efficiency of offshore wind farms, Physics World reported on October 14, 2026. Researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands discovered that atmospheric mixing effects caused by these clouds shrink the wake of slower air that forms behind operating wind turbines. [1]

When air moves through wind turbine blades, it slows down and creates a wake that hinders the performance of nearby turbines. Physics World noted that scientists have known for decades that multiple wind farms operating together are significantly less efficient than a single isolated farm due to this wake effect. [1]

Policy makers often debate the constraints and opportunities associated with renewable energy infrastructure. The new findings offer specific atmospheric insights that could alter these technical discussions regarding power output and spatial planning. [2]

The research team stated that analyzing cloud-related atmospheric effects will help wind farm designers optimize farm layouts based on local ambient weather conditions, Physics World reported. [1]

In short

  • Researchers at the University of Twente found that low level sea clouds boost offshore wind farm efficiency.
  • Atmospheric mixing from clouds shrinks the wake of slow air created behind turbine blades.
  • Multiple wind farms are less efficient than isolated ones due to cumulative air wakes.
