Microbial biosignatures extend through top kilometer of sedimentary basins

A new data compilation shows that biological signatures track microbial cells and fluid flow down to one kilometer deep in sedimentary basins before permeability limits life.

Biological signatures of microbial life extend robustly through the upper kilometer of Earth sedimentary basins, according to a report by Eos Earth and Space Science. Researchers McIntosh and colleagues compiled subsurface data to determine how deep the fingerprints of life reach into the Earth crust. Sedimentary basins are large depressions in the Earth crust where sediments accumulate and compact over time. The team analyzed three specific biotic signals, including the carbon isotope ratios of carbon dioxide and methane alongside oil density. [1][5]

The study found that these three biological indicators are most pronounced where microbial cells are abundant, permeability is high, and water inputs are active. Permeability measures how easily fluids can pass through rocks and sediments. Eos Earth and Space Science reported that below the one kilometer threshold, physical permeability restricts the presence of microbes even when environmental temperatures remain warm enough to support living organisms. [1]

Understanding the depth limits of the deep biosphere has historically proven difficult due to a scarcity of direct sampling data. By demonstrating that biosignatures track physical fluid inputs and cell counts across the top kilometer, the research clarifies how physical parameters constrain subterranean ecosystems. [1]

In short

  • Biosignatures track microbial cells, water inputs, and permeability through the top kilometer of sedimentary basins.
  • Below one kilometer, physical permeability limits microbial presence even where temperatures are suitable for life.
  • The studied biological signals include the carbon isotope ratios of methane and carbon dioxide as well as oil density.
