The News International reported that NASA announced on Tuesday that the Perseverance rover has set a record for total distance driven on the surface of Mars. The vehicle has covered 28.1 miles since arriving on the planet in 2021. The New York Times and NASA Science also covered the record. [1][5][6]
The News International reported that Perseverance surpassed the previous Martian driving distance record of 28.06 miles. That earlier record was set by NASA's Opportunity rover between 2004 and 2018. Perseverance achieved its new benchmark after five and a half years of operations. [1]
Perseverance reached Mars on February 18, 2021, as part of the Mars 2020 mission managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The vehicle landed in Jezero Crater to search for evidence of ancient microbial life in an ancient river delta. Opportunity landed in January 2004 as part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission alongside the Spirit rover. [7][8]
The primary objective of the Perseverance mission is to explore the surface of Mars and analyze geological formations that may have supported past life. The News International noted that the rover continues its mission to locate conditions suitable for ancient microbial existence on the planet. [1][7]
In short

- The previous driving record of 28.06 miles was held by the Opportunity rover.
- Perseverance reached the Martian surface on February 18, 2021.
- The vehicle conducts research inside Jezero Crater to find signs of past microbial life.
