Actor Christina Applegate announced that a recent medical reevaluation determined she does not have multiple sclerosis, Live Science reported. Applegate was originally diagnosed with the central nervous system condition over five years ago. She stated on a podcast that she remains without an accurate diagnosis for her symptoms, according to Live Science. [1]

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the myelin sheath covering nerve fibers, causing communication issues between the brain and the body. Live Science reported that identifying the condition can be difficult because its symptoms often overlap with other neurological disorders. Studies estimate that misdiagnosis rates for multiple sclerosis range from 5% to over 18%, according to Live Science. [1]

Applegate gained recognition in the late 1980s for her role as Kelly Bundy in the television sitcom Married with Children, which ran from 1987 to 1997. She later received a Primetime Emmy Award for a guest appearance on Friends, as well as nominations for her roles in Samantha Who and Dead to Me. [7][8]

Diagnostic processes for multiple sclerosis rely on magnetic resonance imaging, lumbar punctures, and neurological examinations to rule out alternative causes. According to Live Science, medical evaluations have improved over time, but doctors still face challenges when confirming a definitive diagnosis. [1]
