Medical research papers frequently label older literature as recent, according to an analysis reported by Medical Daily. Researchers examined references within biomedical publications to assess how accurately authors use temporal language when citing previous scientific studies. [1]

Medical Daily reported that two researchers in Madrid analyzed 1,000 biomedical papers that described a cited study as recent. The analysis was published in December 2025 in the Christmas issue of The BMJ. The researchers found that the ages of the cited studies ranged from zero to 37 years old. [1]

Out of the 1,000 examined papers, 17.7 percent of the references labeled as recent, totaling 177 citations, pointed to scientific work published at least 10 years earlier, Medical Daily reported. Some citations dated back to the late 1980s. [1]

The authors of the study suggested that researchers often use the word recent to signal the importance or novelty of a finding rather than an actual calendar date, Medical Daily reported. This practice affects public understanding, as news reports and press releases frequently rely on phrases such as recent research shows when describing medical evidence. [1]
