Potsdam Institute study finds statistically significant acceleration in global warming

A new study by researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research shows that global warming has accelerated sharply since around 2015. EdexLive reported that Earth is heating up faster than at any time since modern temperature records began in 1880. Climate variability refers to variations in climate lasting longer than individual weather events, whereas contemporary climate change describes variations that persist for decades or longer. [1][7]

According to EdexLive, the rate of global warming has increased to approximately 0.35 degrees Celsius per decade. This pace is nearly double the average rate recorded between 1970 and 2015. Researchers verified the trend with more than 98 percent statistical confidence after removing natural climate fluctuations. [1]

Human activities have increasingly affected the climate since the Industrial Revolution. In regions such as the Arctic, warming occurs at three to four times the global average rate, leading to the rapid melting of the Greenland ice sheet, thawing permafrost landscapes, and severe declines in polar sea ice. In short

  • Global warming has accelerated to roughly 0.35 degrees Celsius per decade since around 2015.
  • The current warming rate is nearly double the average pace recorded between 1970 and 2015.
  • Researchers confirmed the acceleration with more than 98 percent statistical confidence after filtering out natural climate variations.
  • Modern global temperature records began in 1880.
